Brown Brothers Ltd. began in 1889 as a bicycle manufacturer and wholesaler, later expanding into motorcycles and aircraft parts. Founded by Albert and Ernest Brown at 7 Great Eastern Street in London, the company benefited from the rapid rise in cycling after the invention of the pneumatic tyre, which helped trigger a bicycle boom in the 1890s. The business grew quickly, expanding its London premises in 1891 and opening a Paris branch the following year.
In the early 20th century, as bicycle sales declined, Brown Brothers diversified into motorcycles and motor cars, producing Brown motorcycles from 1902 to 1915. After the First World War, motorcycle production ended, and the company focused on motor accessories, aircraft components, and its popular Vindec bicycles.
The company operated for at least a century, marking its centenary in 1989 under the ownership of Dana Inc. Ownership then changed several times, passing to Partco, then Unipart. In 2008, PPG Inc. acquired Unipart’s Crash Repair Division, forming Brown Brothers Distribution Ltd. By 2013, it had become a successful subsidiary of PPG Industries (UK) Ltd, operating through 14 branches and selling over £30 million worth of coatings and related materials across the UK.
